EMOTIONS

You don't have emotions. You make them.

Built on Lisa Feldman Barrett's science
of constructed emotion.

01 · THE WORLD POURS IN

Every second, the world floods you.

Light, sound, faces, words, the weight of the room. Your senses never pause, and far more arrives than you will ever get to keep. This is the outside stream. It has been running since the day you were born.

"I walked in and felt the room before anyone said a word."

02 · THE BODY REPORTS

And under the skin, a second flood.

Heart, lungs, gut, hormones. Your organs report every second of your life, and they report early. The body speaks before events happen, because your brain prepares it in advance. This is the inside stream.

"My stomach dropped before the phone even rang."

03 · THE HASH

Two streams meet. The sum is yours alone.

This exact second: this light, this noise, this heartbeat, this gut. Nobody has ever held this exact combination, and you will never hold it again. It has no name yet. It is pure sensation.

"Something was off all morning. I couldn't say what."

04 · THE NAMING

Name the sensation and it becomes an emotion.

Your brain reaches for a concept it learned and glues the raw pattern into one thing: anger. The same pounding heart becomes fear on a dark street and thrill on a rollercoaster. The word decides what you feel.

"Same butterflies. Before the exam I called it panic. Before the date, excitement."

05 · THE UNNAMED

No concept, no emotion.

If you never learned the concept, you can't play it in yourself. Some emotions belong to one nation alone. Russians feel тоска. Portuguese feel saudade. Japanese feel amae. Tahitians have no word for sadness, so they don't feel it the way you do. Same streams, different libraries.

"There is a feeling I can only have in my mother tongue."

06 · THE AUTHOR

If you name them, you can rename them.

An emotion is not something that happens to you. It is a sensation your brain named, and the naming can change. Learn finer words and the storm breaks into weather you can read. You are not the weather. You are the one naming it, every single time it rolls in.

"I stopped saying 'I am angry'. I tried 'anger is passing through'. It passed."

Hover the figure, the streams and the word constellations.
